About Made By Mary
My name is Mary Lewis and I am a lifelong artist living on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. We are surrounded by beautiful landscapes such as forests full of evergreens and the Olympic Mountains. We have some amazing wildlife such as roosevelt elk and bald eagles. The majority of my art pieces are inspired from my surroundings and growing up in nature.
Although I have dabbled in many types of art throughout my life, creating mosaic style artwork using upcycled magazines is my favorite. What started as a family craft project making greeting cards, turned into an art that I haven't stopped creating since. That was in 2020.
The process of creating an upcycled magazine mosaic is unique. I sort out different colors, patterns and textures from magazines that were saved from the garbage or recycle. I store them away by color. When I'm ready to create a piece I do a light sketch. I start working on the background first, one color at a time. I then choose the shades and patterns I will be using and cut them into different shapes and sizes. Each one is glued down individually and I work my way to the foreground.
Not only is my art giving a new life to something considered to be trash but I'm able to create a unique art experience.
